Research Assistant/Research Associate (Fixed Term)

A position is available for a highly motivated research associate working on the spatial regulation of gene expression, and its engineering in plants.

The successful applicant will join Professor Julian Hibberd's laboratory in Cambridge at the Department of Plant Sciences. Using rice and/or Arabidopsis, the project will focus on understanding how some promoters drive expression in specific cell types, and in using this information to establish various chassis in which parts of metabolic pathways can be activated in these cells. Approaches will include synthetic biology approaches to test candidate regulators; high-throughput cloning followed by production of transgenic lines; genotyping and phenotyping, and possibly deep sequencing and cell biology analysis. Findings will be relevant to discovery science also possibly major crops of the world.

The position can start as soon as possible. Successful candidates will have a strong background in plant molecular biology. Experience with synthetic biology, regulation of gene expression and cell biology, and metabolic re- engineering will be advantageous. Information on the laboratory is available at hibberdlab.com.

Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of his/her PhD). The higher Research Associate salary should be backdated to the submission date of their thesis.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 October 2022 in the first instance.
