Research Associate in Metal-Air Batteries (Fixed Term)

Description

A position exists for a Research Associate to work on the development of metal-air batteries between the Chemistry department and the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC) of the University of Cambridge. This work will be devoted to achieving high performing metal oxygen batteries, with special emphasis in electrode and electrolyte characterization and electrochemical tests. The aim of the role is to develop, characterize and evaluate the performance of novel electrodes based on graphene and related materials and compatible electrolytes in metal O2 batteries. Fabrication and characterization of electrodes and battery prototypes will be performed in the CGC dry room and energy lab. Battery testing will be performed post-mortem and in operando conditions to evaluate the performance and degradation of the batteries, with emphasis in XRD, SEM, NMR, pressure monitoring and mass spectrometry.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Nanotechnology, or Applied Physics with a proven track record in electrochemistry, energy storage and nanotechnology, including processing, fabrication, characterization of electrode materials. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience in battery testing and electrode characterization, and understanding of degradation mechanisms and chemical determination. Expertise with in-situ Raman, XRD, SEM, TEM and NMR is needed. Experience with other battery techniques is desirable.

Preference will be given to candidates with proven track record in metal O2 cells and using in situ/operando techniques to study degradation during battery cycling, as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of imaging analysis using Python or Matlab advantageous .

The role holder would possess sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to develop research objectives, projects and proposals. The candidate will continually update knowledge in the specialist area and engage in professional development; have experience of managing own workload. The candidate would possess sufficient administrative skills to manage EU project/s including financial management, experience in handing collaborations within EU projects, including reporting and attendance to project meetings.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge/ Cambridge Graphene Centre, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD.

Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £33,309 - £40,927
