Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for an Operational Researcher or Data Scientist who wishes to develop an Education and Research career pathway at the University of Exeter.

This role will develop highly impactful applied collaborative healthcare projects, and also support those working in health services to develop skills in these areas. The researcher will use approaches such as Discrete Event Simulation, Network Analysis, Geographic Modelling, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to improve the operational delivery of services.

As a key part of the role, the researcher will assist the development and delivery of our flagship Health Service Modelling Associates (HSMA) programme (https: // sites.google.com/nihr.ac.uk/hsma). This online-delivered training and mentoring programme works with staff from health, social care and policing organisations nationally. The programme teaches modelling and data science skills and supports associates to apply these new skills to impactful projects of importance for their organisation.

Previous HSMA projects have led to significant impact, including £multi- million investments in mental health services and modelling roles being established in health trusts. About you

We are looking for a Research Fellow to join us (initially for two years), and work with the HSMA Programme Lead to 1) become involved in (and further develop) areas of research in applied Operational Research and Data Science in health within the team, and 2) feed this research into further developing and delivering the HSMA programme nationally. This role would suit a researcher who has experience in applied modelling or Data Science, and would enjoy supporting people working in sectors where these methods are not routinely used to apply them to collaborative research projects.

You will have some experience of applied Operational Research or Data Science. Coding experience is essential, ideally in Python. Experience of using open systems such as Linux, Jupyter Notebooks, and Git would be advantageous but not essential.

Strong communication skills are important. The ability to coach and support the learning of multidisciplinary teams is essential.

You will have relevant qualifications and experience in Computer Science, Maths/Engineering, or a Medical Sciences subject.
