Postdoctoral Research Associate - Tropical Ecosystems

Job ID 3872 Date posted 07/06/2023

Brookhaven National Laboratory (www. bnl.gov) delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.

Organizational Overview The Environmental & Climate Sciences Department (www. bnl.gov/envsci) at Brookhaven National Laboratory focuses on a wide range of theoretical, experimental, and field studies in support of the U.S. Department of Energy's climate and energy research agendas.

The Terrestrial Ecosystem Science and Technology (TEST) group in the Environmental & Climate Sciences Department seeks to improve the representation of ecosystem processes in Earth System Models to increase our ability to understand and project global change. We study processes that have a global impact on climate, and focus on ecosystems that are poorly understood, sensitive to global change, and inadequately represented in models. Our goal is to advance process level understanding of terrestrial ecosystems, incorporate new knowledge into models, reduce model uncertainty and ultimately improve our ability to understand and project global change.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The selected candidates will join the Terrestrial Ecosystem Science & Technology Group (www. bnl.gov/envsci/testgroup) and become a part of a multi-institutional, multi-national research project, Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE) Tropics (https: // ngee-tropics.lbl.gov/). The NGEE-Tropics project represents a decadal investment by the US Department of Energy's Office of Science to advance model predictions of tropical forest carbon cycle responses to a changing climate.

Position Description The Terrestrial Ecosystem Science and Technology (TEST) group is seeking a post-doc interested in improving understanding and model representation of leaf and canopy level processes that regulate the exchange of carbon, water, and energy in tropical forests to enable improved projections of the response of tropical forests to climate change. The successful candidate will join a small, highly collaborative, and supportive group at BNL and collaborate with other scientists as part of the multi-institutional Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments - Tropics project (ngee-tropics.lbl.gov). This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

・ Conduct measurements associated with advancing understanding and model representation of leaf and canopy processes in tropical forests

・ Conduct fieldwork at one or more of the NGEE Tropics field sites most likely in The Republic of Panama and Brazil, possibly for extended periods of time

・ Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences

Position Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

・ Ph.D. in plant biology, ecology, or a closely related field

・ Clear and concise oral and written communication and presentation skills

・ Willingness to work in remote field locations, potentially for extended periods

・ Demonstrated history of publishing results of research in peer-reviewed, scientific journals

・ Ability to work collaboratively in team-based research environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

・ Ability to speak Spanish and Portuguese

OTHER INFORMATION:

・ Initial 2-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding

・ BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events

・ Work under the supervision of Alistair Rogers & Shawn Serbin

・ We are now considering applications and the position will remain open until a suitable candidate has been identified. To ensure full consideration please apply before August 31, 2023

・ Position will require occasional foreign/domestic travel

・ This is an on-site position eligible for consideration of flexible work arrangement (hybrid telework) at the discretion of the manager/dept chair

・ Applicants must have a valid driver's license and a willingness to drive in foreign countries, often off road

At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to:

・ Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Plans

・ Flexible Spending Accounts

・ Paid Time-off and Leave Programs (vacation, holidays, sick leave, paid parental leave)

・ 401(k) Plan

・ Flexible Work Arrangements

・ Tuition Assistance, Training and Professional Development Programs

・ Employee Fitness/Wellness & Recreation: Gym/Basketball Courts, Weight Room, Fitness Classes, Indoor Pool, Tennis Courts, Sports Clubs/Activities (Basketball, Ping Pong, Softball, Tennis)
