At the Department of Energy and Technology, research and education are conducted focusing on how agriculture can contribute to a sustainable society. We have extensive expertise in technology and systems for sustainable production of food and bioenergy, including optimal nutrition circuits and logistics systems. Within the field of methodology we have extensive competence in System Analysis including Environmental Systems Analysis and LCA, as well as Biometrics (statistics and mathematics with applications in biological systems) and Automation.

Duties:

Current food systems are unsustainable and sensitive to shocks. In order to transform food systems, we need more knowledge on how systems can be designed to be both sustainable (i.e. delivering healthy diets at low negative environmental and social cost) and resilience (i.e. able to cope with different types of disturbances). While conceptualizations and assessments of food system sustainability are emerging rapidly, less attention has been paid to food system resilience and preparedness.

This position involves working in an interdisciplinary project aimed at conceptualizing `sustainable preparedness´, develop indicators that can be used to evaluate the current status and monitor progress towards sustainable preparedness and to investigate how public and private policies can support transition towards sustainable preparedness. The role of this postdoc will be to build on the food system resilience literature, current national strategies and initiatives of food preparedness and stakeholder input to concretize and describe what sustainable preparedness is. This postdoc will work in close collaboration with other researchers focusing on developing methods for quantitative assessment of resilience and preparedness a team of experienced researchers at the Department of Energy and Technology and the Department of Economics at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a motivated person who enjoys working in interdisciplinary environments.

Requirements:

A PhD in a subject relevant to the research, for example environmental and sustainability assessment, food system, agricultural science, economics, rural development or similar.

Advanced conceptual and analytic capabilities in relevant fields.

Excellent English skills in writing and speaking is required.

Advantages:

Experience of a range of qualitative and quantitative social science methods for capturing stakeholder perceptions is an advantage.

Knowledge of sustainability assessment and European food systems, agriculture and economics.

A clearly expressed and genuine interest in sustainable development and how to accomplish a sustainable food system in general.

Experience of interdisciplinary research.

Knowledge of Swedish, Danish and/or Norwegian.

Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, such as the ability to work independently, flexibility, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines, curiosity and willingness to learn, as well as a good analytical and problem- solving ability.

The position is intended for a junior researcher and we are primarily looking for people who has completed their doctorate no more than three years ago.
