Postdoctoral Research Scientist in STRUBI

We are seeking an ambitious and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the research Group of Professor Jonathan Grimes, located in the Division for Structural Biology, at the Nuffield Department of Medicine. You join a Wellcome Trust-Funded Project to understand in molecular detail Influenza virus replication and transcription, and the process of viral assembly.

You will be responsible for managing your own academic research activities, which involves small scale project management to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work and meet deadlines. You will adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques and experimental protocols, and test hypotheses and analyse scientific data from a variety of sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate. You will contribute ideas for new research projects, and contribute to the presentation of scientific results through journal articles, posters and oral presentations at national/international conferences.

It is essential that you hold a PhD (or close to completion) in structural biology, biochemistry, virology or a related field, together with experience in X-ray crystallography and/or single particle cryo-EM techniques with a strong commitment to gaining expertise cryo-tomography which will drive forward the use of these approaches. It is essential that you have a clear interest in developing correlative approaches of cryo-SIM and cryo-ET data, and have experience with multiple biophysical and cell-based assays, to validate structural information. Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken is essential for the role.
