Postdoctoral Position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 100%) in Organic Chemistry Synthesis of Polycyclic Aromatic Molecules

TACY (Tackling the Cyclacene Challenge) is a joint project between the research groups of Michael Mastalerz (Heidelberg University), Holger Bettinger (University Tübingen), and Michael Gottfried (University of Marburg), financially supported by an ERC Synergy Grant starting in April 2023. The aim is to synthesize cyclacenes, an intriguing class of cyclic aromatic compounds first proposed by Heilbronner in 1954, which have so far resisted all attempts of synthesis. By combining the expertise of organic synthesis, matrix isolation, surface chemistry, and theoretical calculations, the TACY team will apply a new, synergistic approach to solving this long- standing challenge.

Within the ERC supported project, a postdoc position (payment 100% E 13 TV-L for 2 years, with the possibility of extension ) in Tübingen (Bettinger Research Group) is available, starting April 1, 2023 or later. Objective is the synthesis of cyclacenes by matrix isolation techniques and their computational characterization. Therefore, we are looking for experimentally skilled candidates holding a doctoral degree in chemistry with experience in low-temperature spectroscopy and the application of computational chemistry methods. Prior work in the area of fused aromatic compounds is advantageous. It is expected that the candidate is co-supervising a small team of PhD and Master students and is able to prepare manuscript drafts. Therefore, excellent written and oral skills in English are required.
