The Area

This position is fully funded by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science (ACEAS), which is a major $25M Special Research Initiative of the Australian Research Council. The goal of ACEAS is to help the world community prepare for climate risks emerging from East Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by integrating knowledge of the ocean, atmosphere, cryosphere and ecosystems, and their interplay. ACEAS is a national-scale, University-led centre for excellence in Antarctic science focused on this goal. ACEAS is led by the University of Tasmania with a range of Australian and International Partners. The Australian National University is excited to be one of the partners in ACEAS.

The Position

The main responsibilities of the Postdoctoral/Research Fellow role include, but are not limited to:

Prepare and participate in MIZ and Denman marine science voyages for the sampling of trace metals in the water column and surficial sediments,

Determine trace element concentration and isotope composition of water column and sediment samples using state-of-the-art methods such as MC-ICP- MS.

Evaluate the links between trace elements and isotopes and oceanographic (physical and biological) features in the areas of interest.

The position may also include using sediment records to reconstruct trace element cycling on the Antarctic continental shelf and slope through time or culturing relevant Southern Ocean phytoplankton and linking their trace element requirement to field measurements made on the MIZ and Denman marine science voyages.

The Person

To excel in this role, you will have:

A PhD (or awarding of a PhD within six months of appointment commencement for appointments at level A) in marine biogeochemistry, chemical oceanography, or other relevant fields.

Significant research experience as evidenced by publications and independent research of a high international standard.

Experience in trace element and isotope analysis by ICPMS.

Seagoing field experience (desirable).

Ability to supervise PhD/Masters research students and research support staff.
