Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral mathematical and computational modeller to join the Theoretical and Computational Epidemiology group in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge. The post is for 15 months starting as soon as possible and will involve developing a spatially explicit model for the large scale spread of a major disease of citrus.

The disease, known as citrus greening, is caused by a bacterium that is transmitted by an insect vector, as well as by human movement of plant material. The model will simulate spread of disease in selected countries in the EU, accounting for the distribution of citrus host, the dynamics of the vector ¿ the range of which is actively expanding ¿ and meteorological variables. A prime aim of the modelling is to provide a tool to inform industry and policy/regulators on preparedness, surveillance and options for management of the disease in the event of an outbreak. A major use of the developed model, therefore, will be in optimising disease detection and control strategies at the landscape scale.

Applications are invited from candidates with a PhD in applied mathematics, physics, statistics, theoretical ecology or related subjects. Familiarity with mathematical modelling of disease epidemics and/or experience of parameter estimation would be advantageous, but neither is essential.

Knowledge of handling spatial data is highly desirable, and candidates must have very strong programming skills, ideally in C, Python or R. The ideal candidate will also be able to work closely with biologists to incorporate realistic biological processes into models, and to understand the data available for parameter estimation.
