Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Childhood Cancer Research

We have available a position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow for a fixed term of three years on a project financed by The Norwegian Childhood Cancer Society concerning research on the children cancer rhabdomyosarcoma.

The position is available at the Institute for Cancer Research. The institute hosts core facilities for multiparameter flow cytometery, next generation sequencing, imaging and bioinformatics. The Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) of Oslo University Hospital (OUH) at The Norwegian Radium Hospital, is one of the largest Cancer Centers in Europe.

The project is led by Professor Jørgen Wesche who is leader of the "Molecular Biology of Sarcomas” group at the Institute for Cancer Research. The goal of the group is to develop novel opportunities for precision medicine in cancer treatment.

The group is member of a Norwegian Centre of Excellence, Centre for Cancer Cell Reprogramming (CanCell). The group makes extensive use of advanced molecular cell biology methods, proteomics and light microscopy and are developing a platform for CRISPR screening. Job description

Precision medicine is the new paradigm of modern cancer treatment and gives hope to an increasing number of cancer patients. Unfortunately, childhood cancers seem to lag behind this development mainly because they are rare and therefore difficult to study and they have little commercial interest. While rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) has a high probability for positive treatment outcome, many patients with metastatic disease succumb to their disease and patients with relapse usually have a dismal prognosis. Furthermore, the high positive treatment rates in childhood cancer may be misleading as many paediatric cancer patients suffer from severe side effects later in life. It is therefore clear that new treatment strategies are required to improve the outcome of paediatric cancer patients.

CRISPR based technologies have revolutionized medical research in the last years and have opened up for affordable genetic screens in mammalian cells to investigate functional networks in cancer. We will perform genetic screens in selected rhabdomyosarcoma cell lines of both alveolar and embryonal origin in order to identify relevant targets for precision medicine. A focused library towards drug targets, kinases and phosphatases (2300 targets) will be applied and the functional readout of the screen will be cell viability in order to identify targets that can inhibit the proliferation of RMS cells.

Novel targets from CRISPR screens will be validated by immunohistochemistry on Norwegian RMS patient material from the Norwegian Childhood Cancer Biobank.

Drugs against selected promising candidates will be tested in panels of RMS cell lines. Mouse models will be used to test drugs in vivo. Thus, we will identify novel targets for precision therapy in RMS with the possibility for further clinical testing.

Eligibility and qualifications

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in life sciences or medicine.

Candidates should have qualifications matching the technologies that will be used in the project (see under job description).

Previous experience with CRISPR/Cas9 technology is required.

Experience in cell biology research is an advantage.
